When planning a green roof, there are a few things you need to think about prior to installation:
- What is the load of your structural support?
- What is the roof pitch?
- Is there enough sunlight?
- Access to the roof for the installation and maintenance

All our supply-only deliveries take 3-4 working days. (Tuesday-Friday). You can email us at supplyonly@sky-garden.co.uk to specify your preferred delivery date and site contact number, and we will do our best to fulfil your requirement. It will be conveniently packaged, palletized, and kerbside delivered to the site. It is the buyer’s responsibility to move the pallets from the "kerb" to the roof. Sedum modular trays must be installed within 48 hours from the delivery date.
If you require an installation, then Sky Garden will carry out a site visit to determine the installation requirements and discuss logistics, access, lifting, and site safety.
This process ensures that materials will be procured and delivered to site in an efficient manner.

Sky Garden have installed over 500,000 m2 of living roof systems, with a national network of green roof installation teams. Every Sky Garden green roof installation is coordinated by an SMSTS (Site Manager Safety Training Scheme) qualified manager, each with at least 5 years green roof installation experience. Sky Garden are committed to having a minimum of two operatives on every site, with a SSSTS trained supervisor on site at all times. Operating nationwide, our DBS-checked installers prioritise health and safety, holding relevant NVQ qualifications or actively working towards them.

Access to a water point is essential during the establishment stage of most green roofs, especially if installation coincides with the hotter dryer Summer months. We suggest on an extensive sedum green roofs a permanent irrigation system is not necessary, but consideration must be paid to the roof and supplementary watering if periods of prolonged drought (2 weeks) occur.
Wildflowers by their nature thrive on poor soils where there is little competition however they are more vulnerable to drought. For that reason Sky Garden recommends irrigation system to be installed on those roofs. The deeper the substrate used the more moisture it can hold to ensure plant survival during dry periods. If you have a maintenance contract in place for your green roof with an irrigation system, Sky Garden will ensure its ongoing performance. We commission the system in spring and decommission it in autumn to prevent freezing and pipe damage. Our team also inspects all components to ensure they are fully operational, keeping your irrigation system running efficiently so your green roof thrives year-round.

Maintenance for a living roof needs to be considered from the outset. There is no such thing as a 'no' maintenance roof, green or otherwise. All new commercial buildings are required to have roof and gutter checks twice a year and an extensive green roof can be designed to align with this requirement. The maintenance required will depend on the outcome desired by the client.
We recommend biannual visits to clear any weed infestation, and one application of fertiliser in the early spring, in time for the growing season. Spring remedial and Autumn cutting for the wildflower roofs, when the vegetation will be trimmed after flowers seeded. Drainage outlets and inspection chambers cleared of vegetation, as with any roof. Ensure riverstone perimeters are clear of dead and live plants. Sedum roofs should maintain their lush, and healthy sedum coverage. Infestations of grass and other weeds will soon die off due to insufficient substrate depth and become unsightly.
